The presence of plastic in the environment in large quantities can dangerously affect the life of animals, their habitat, and human life. This is called plastic pollution.

Causes of plastic pollution:

  • Failure of recycling and reusing of plastic products.
  • Burning of plastic products.
  • Disposal of plastic on land and soil.

Harmful effects of plastic pollution:

  • Marine animals can swallow plastic in water and it can be trapped in their throats which causes their death.
  • Most animals mistake plastic for food and consume it which causes death.
  • When plastic products are burnt in micro-wave ovens they produce toxic chemicals that can cause cancer in humans.
  • It can decrease the fertility of the land.
  • If burnt, it can pollute the air.
  • Its disposal of water causes water pollution.

Precautionary measures for plastic pollution:

  • Adopt the 3R’s Policy.
  • Say no to plastic products.
  • Use plastic bags, plastic bottles and other plastic products again and again till they are not fit for use.
  • Glass containers should be used in place of plastic containers.
  • Give priority to use boxes (detergents and soap etc.) instead of bottles.
  • Clean the society regularly.
  • Laws should be made to check plastic pollution.
  • Awareness should be created among people about it.
